Greeting

Where "we contemplate our own navels" to decide how this forum should evolve. What features do we need? Who decides what we need?

Greeting

Postby Neill on Mon Dec 22, 2008 6:12 pm

In the welcome forum I have attempted to add a message at the top that explains what, why and where.
I have locked the posting as I do not want it turning in to a large thread.
But ...
I am sure there are spelling or syntax mistakes in it and some of you may prefer another means of introduction.

therefore this thread. Once we are in agreement, I will change the "introduction as appropriate.

maybe you could say 'hello' in some other languages. just to be friendly.

I don't think you can say 'Firstly welcome to the ..' etc.. Since you don't then go on to say what's 'secondly'.

Firstly welcome to The Systems Place.

Arriving here – your first question is probably “what is this forum about?”
A good question with a complicated answer. To try and begin to answer, here is a quote from Andrea Berardi

I would say that systems thinking/a systems approach is about:
1 looking first at the "big picture"/environment when engaging with a complex/messy situation before narrowing down on the "causes" and "solutions" of the problem (i.e. setting boundaries);
2. Valuing multiple perspectives (different cognitive styles, intelligences, etc) while at the same time being aware of those in positions of power who will always work to maintain their position (identifying the positive and negative feedback loops in operation that will prevent/enable your system to work);
3. Establishing an optimizing, often subversive, "learning cycle" for working through complex/messy situations.

A “mind map” of the Systems Place can be viewed by clicking on this diagram

Hi Teiana!
I don't see the point of saying hello in any other language than English unless we also intend providing content in that language.
And which languages should we use? Chinese? Croatian? Zulu? and the other 800 (http://www.elite.net/~runner/jennifers/hello.htm)?

But I did take your point about "Firstly..." and have changed the text accordingly as well as adding some instructions.

systems is about communicating?
communicating in systems often uses pictures.
pictures work in all languages.
therefore we *are* providing content in other languages? :-)

fair enough, though. Wouldn't want to confuse anyone.

can i be picky?

you say

your first question is probably “what is this forum about?”
A good question with a complicated answer. To try and begin to answer,

but you don't actually answer the question.

you just quote some stuff from andrea and then go into the instructions bit.

Well, why say it's a question and say it has an answer, and suggest you are going to begin to answer it, and then , not answer it?

there's something missing..

Cause you can be picky.
Could you also suggest a better introduction?
I am open to any and all suggestions.

How about
Arriving here – your first question is probably “what is this forum about?”
A good question with a complicated answer. Obviously it is about sytems thinking (you probably guessed that from the name) and systems practices but that only leads on to the question "What is systems thinking?"
To try and begin to answer that question, here is a quote from Andrea Berardi

Thanks for the feedback
It is now changed.

It will be interesting to see if T214 has any errors left once you have finished proof reading.
