I was surprised that a new member joined on 19th September and immediately sent me a private message which appears to be spam unless I have misunderstood it.

Hello Dave,

I wonder why he chose you.
I did not receive a message.
Maybe you make a more afluent impression than I do?

Have fun

At the time I was surprised by how quickly the private message was sent after the person became a member and slightly puzzled both by the message and why I received the message. I am even more puzzled now.

can we have some kind of roll call?
i am very puzzled because there appear to be high numbers of people reading my 'diary' thread, but hardly anyone posting to the site overall. I don't think this makes sense so i assume that it is robots reading the thread and not real people. There have been over 100 views of the diary thread in the last 24 hours. Surely if that was 100 real people, some of them would have been posting to other threads. I'd be interested to see how many actual human beings come past here in any say 24 hr period.

You'd be surprised to see how many "lurkers" there are out there. We get a lot of data about this at the OU. In some courses, there are only about 20% of the student population that actively participate in discussion fora. The other 60% just read the postings. That's just how it is........that's just how society is. How many people watch the news? How many people actually do something about it?
