Hi Steve,
... so I'm looking forward to it starting.

I am sure you will enjoy it. I am sure that at some point you will think "what the hell is this all about?"
But when you get that far, then come visit again and we will tell you that it is only temporary.
T214 is an absolute "experience".

Hi - on my long-winded way to a BSc Hons Environmental Studies (only two courses to go!) I have registered for my first systems course - I am not sure whether I am a logical thinker but hopefully will survive until October - at least there is no exam.......

Welcome Flis.
And welcome to the wonderful world of Systems.
Some one said that Systems is like taking the red pill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redpill).
Three years after starting out on the systems path, I think I have to agree.
You see things differently after T214 so I hope you enjoy it. I know that at some point you will need some where to say "Aaahhrrgg!" so feel free to post when you get to that stage. It is the other side of the "Aaahhrrgg!" that the fun starts :-)

actually 'not sure whether i am a logical thinker' is precisely the best place to start. From my observations, it is those who are convinced they are very logical thinkers who come unstuck in systems thinking. There is something you have to do in your brain involving unlocking 'logical thinking' and allowing in All kinds of thinking.. since a lot of what systems thinking is about, is dealing with people who aren't thinking logically....

have you ever seen a rectangular 50 pence piece?

I'm all signed up to start T214 in Feb 2011 and looking forward to it.

2011(T214) & 2012(T306) will be my final years with the OU looking to graduate with B33 just before it is retired...

I'm needing to finish B33 before 2014 too - T214 next month then T306 in 2012. See you on the course ;)

I have a considerable number of extra modules to jam in too, unfortunately. I'm currently in the middle of M255 and I'm going to have to overlap courses all the way up to 2014, and at one point do two at the same time (although I can pick a level 1 for that period I think).

Busy time for me then. Happy to have found this forum while searching for T214 and will be sure to be picking people's brains once the course starts :)

I'm a software tester by trade and thought that this course (along with T306) would be an ideal comlement to both my career and personal interest.

Anyway, hello!

Hi Rutty and welcome.

There are plenty of contributors to the Systems Place and I hope you will find it as useful as I and many others who studies the first T214 course did.

If you want it, my only advice is, never be afraid to ask any questions.

Good luck and enjoy both systems courses.

Then prepare to have your brain turned inside out.
I used to write software and found mistakes about looking at smaller and smaller chunks until I found the ")" in the wrong place.
Systems is all about forgetting that and looking for the problem by taking a "broad overview".
The techniques are amazing but take a lot of getting used to for a technician.

Thanks Neill, yes I'm aware that there's going to be a mindset change. I think this will actually help me in my current role where I need to consider the wider picture of the systems under test. However, I'm far more used to the old "half split" method of problem solving, or separating things into chunks for easier digestion.

It's going to be tough to change 20-odd years worth of thinking but I'm really looking forward to it :)

Thanks Richard - I'll be sure to engage both here and in the official forums :)
